What are ergonomic chairs?

These are special chairs that are designed to be adaptable to the user`s need and definitely lead to higher productivity levels due to the customized support they offer.

So when is a chair called ergonomic? Office chairs are called ergonomic when they do have an adjustable seat height, seat depth, and lumbar support. This basically means that you should be able to adjust the height of the chair, so then your legs are perpendicular to the floor, and you should be able to adjust the seat pan or base, so you are seated comfortably. Proper lumbar support allows for adequate support for your lower back so that your spine is in just the correct position to allow a good posture. Ergonomic chairs, in itself, is not a chair type, but the added comfort it provides makes it into an ergonomic one.

Many of these have these adjustments as the bare minimum. About five to nine precise components are fitted in to create these chairs. These include:

Adjustable headrest, lumbar support, adjustable arm width, adjustable arm height, adjustable seat pan, chair height adjustment, adjustable tilt tension, tilt lock.

Now let's look at all these features in more detail.

1) Adjustable seat height:  The adjustable seat height is where your two feet are firmly touching the floor, while you are sitting and your knees assume a 90 degree bent angle. The seat height should be equal to the distance between the top of your knees to the sole of your foot. Alternatively, stand right in front of the chair and adjust the chair`s height, so the top of the seat is just below your own knee cap.

2) Adjustable arm support:  Altogetherwith our hands, our arms make up about 12 % of our total body weight. Because of that, robust arm support in a chair is vital for offsetting that load from our shoulders and neck in the seated position.

At a bare minimum, armrests should be height adjustable...  They should be raisable up to the height of your desk., so that your arms are parallel to the desk when you are, let's say on the computer.. If you have a lack of space, armrests that can be lowered enough to tuck the chair away, under the desk are also a kind of asset.

Armrests must also be pivotable. This means that they can be angled inwards, up to 30 degrees. They must also be width adjustable. This means that they can be moved closer or farther away from your body, helping support your elbows and arms, irrespective of, how wide they may be spreading. People who have very narrow or broad shoulders will definitely benefit from width adjustable armrests.

3) Seat Depth adjustment: This is also called seat sliding. It must be ensured that there is always a 1- 2 inch gap between the seat edge and the end of your thighs, regardless of the size of your body or sitting position. This helps to prevent the seat from cutting off circulation to your legs if the depth is too deep or applying excessive pressure onto your knees if the seat is too shallow.

The others could also have been highlighted and discussed in detail, but we have primarily covered the important features, herein. Read on…else.
